Backyard Squirrels Become Internet Sensation

SANTA MONICA -- A streaming webcam is making stars out of some squirrels.

The idea for the internet phenomenon came in the fall of 2008 when a Santa Monica resident left a few nuts on her porch for neighboring squirrels. The munchies kept the squirrels returning to her home. So she came up with the idea to capture the action live with a webcam, calling it "Bad Manors Squirrel Diner."

The internet show creator goes by the name of "Kim" and tells the Santa Monica Daily Press she wants to protect identity. "Bad Manor" can be seen on Ustream.tv. It quickly earned followers who enjoyed her quirky use of props and makeshift sets and, of course, the squirrels who are the stars.

From time to time, Kim will places action figures in the form of Gandhi to Yoshi, Jane Goodall to lawn gnomes, nuns to zebras to the presidential likenesses of Mt. Rushmore. In the webcasts, the squirrels run up to the toys, pose, snoop around, and explore the sets.
